Montana went strongly for Bush, as everyone and their dog knew it would. (The dog of the house where I was watching returns slept through the whole thing, supremely confident in the outcomes, apparently.) BUT....

We elected Democrats in Montana! )

I'm mourning a little bit about the national picture, but trying to keep relatively moderate about it. Yes, this sucks. And yes, ultimately my very job (and the agency I work for) could be in serious jeopardy. But we have survived 4 years of this, and we will survive 4 more. And we will not give up either! This is a battle for the heart and soul of this country - and we will not let discrimination and close-mindedness prevail!

So call up your local Planned Parenthood, or the ACLU, or the Human Rights Campaign, or whoever you want - and volunteer. They need you, now more than ever. And that power - power of the people, the power of numbers - is what will ultimately win.

(Yeah, I'm full of bravado this morning, but last night we were discussing moving to a blue state, because we can't stand the poltical/social atmosphere much longer.)

Apologies if you've seen this before - it's new to me:

Damn liberals! )

A little light reading for y'all:

The President vs. The Pill

And something else:

Cheney Blames Flu Crisis on Lawsuit Worries

A note on this second item: I'm sure we've all noticed, if a politican blames anything on trial lawyers, you automatically know they are a Republican. Dead giveaway. And soooner or later, everything can be blamed on trial lawyers. Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Have a bad hair day? Did your boss yell at you? Did you step in a mud puddle? All the fault of trial lawyers. (Too bad you can't sue.)

Another note (this one more related to a local state Supreme Court election, but widely applicable, I believe): "Activist judge" or "legislating from the bench" should really just be translated as "this person made an opinion I don't agree with." Can we all just agree on that, and substitute in that phrase when needed? 'Cause I'm getting real sick and tired of the first two, and would much prefer the honesty of my version.

Now repeat after me: it's only two more weeks. Two more weeks. Two more weeks.

I went to a candidate's forum today - mostly local candidates and local issues. There was a program guide that contained statements from lots of the candidates. One of them said that a major priority of his, if elected, was to implement "bear bones" medical policies.... I know we live in Montana - but I didn't realize the wildlife had insurance coverage! My mom and I were nearly hysterical, though we had to do so silently, because it was the middle of the thing.

Just a note that I had the oddest dream last night - so very vivid and realistic. Basically, I was explaining the difference between abstinence-only and abstinence-based sexuality education to our &$*)^%#@ congressman, who was initially hostile, but then started nodding, and agreeing with me. Sadly, I woke up about the time his tone shifted, so I have no idea what my dream-self might have convinced him of next.

So why doesn't this kind of stuff get national media attention?

I tell you, it's enough to make one believe that there is a vast, right-wing conspiracy out there....

Amusing

I just came home to an URGENT piece of mail from John Kerry, which begins "I am sending you this important message just hours after accepting the Democratic nomination."

Funny, that's supposed to happen tomorrow.

So, John Kerry should be elected not only because he's the most qualified candidate for the job, but also because he obviously has discovered time travel - and our government could really benefit from that.

I had my first OB appointment today. Cut because I care )

And now I'm watching the Democratic convention off and on, although it's not exactly a thrill a minute here. But I was remembering watching the 1988 convention (look ma! I've been a geek for a looooong time!) and seeing Jesse Jackson speak. I don't remember what he said, just that he was damn damn impressive.

--Voted this morning. (last primary in the nation)

--As I was leaving the poll, a man asked me if I wanted to sign his petition putting a measure on the state ballot in November to ban gay marriage. His sign said (in case there was any room for doubt on where he stood) "One man. One woman." I looked at him and said "You've got to be kidding." I wish I'd said the other thought I had, which was "You should be ashamed of yourself." But I was too busy walking away and not looking back.

--I get to watch the movie "Real Women Have Curves" at our teen meeting tonight - I've heard excellent things about it, and can't wait. I love that my job sometimes encompasses fun movie nights!!

--We are collecting ideas for future movie nights here - something relating to some aspect of sexuality - and we'd really like things with a positive upbeat message. It gets so tiresome to always show movies that are depressing. Your ideas are welcome.

--Welcome, [livejournal.com profile] xen_opus!

--I'm tired. Time for early dinner.

Eeeee! I just got an email that says I've been picked to go to a Male Health Education thingy in Miami in July! They were only supposed to pick a few per region, and ended up picking 3 from this state alone.... Travel for work makes me happy - because it's still enough of a novelty for me that I can enjoy it. Going to conferences always makes me happy, because I love the opportunities to mingle with similar folks and learn new stuff.

Mmmmm, Miami in July. Aren't you incredibly jealous of me?

The suck thing is that if I didn't get this, I was planning to go visit my sister that week or the week previous - see her, bum around Germnay, and maybe take a jaunt over into France (she's never been in her 4 years of living on the continent; I've just, well, never been). So it definitely messes with my vacation plans, but for a worthwhile cause.

So now I'm contemplating going later. Earlier in summer doesn't work as well with the sister's work schedule.

Of course, plane tickets to Europe currently cost $$$Arm.leg, so maybe this is the world trying to tell me something.

But I really wanted a chance - an excuse to work on my French!!

*******************

In other news, everyone today seems to be talking/writing again about the Curves thing. (If you haven't been exposed to this yet, go check out the article at Salon.) Here's my thought - okay, so the Curves CEO isn't a rabid anti-abortionist funding Operation Save America and the people who wave pictures of dismembered fetuses and call me a murderer and try to bomb clinics. He gives money to crisis pregnancy centers and abstinence-only programs. To say, "Oh, then it's okay - he's not a nut" is still not helpful to my perspective.

CPCs are in some ways *more* dangerous, because they mislead women under the guise of offering valid medical services. Similarly, abstinence-only-til-marriage education represents itself as being the only safe and effective way, while misleading children. So CPCs and AOUM are sneaky and insidious and try to make people believe they are not. That might be worse than the in-your-face protesters in front of clinics. I don't know.

And then - does this mean you should boycott Curves? I'm not a believer in boycotting every person out there who doesn't support my position(s) - okay, that could make life very tricky. I do think people need to draw that line individually for themselves. I don't like Domino's pizza, so that has never been an issue for me. :) I hate WalMart for many reasons even beyond the political (okay, just being in the parking lot there gives me a raging headache) - but a few times a year I find myself going there for something I just can't find anywhere else. No biggie.

The happy event of my day?? I got home and had a package from the ACLU of my favorite Tshirt from the March - hot pink (because that was the theme color (do Marches have theme colors like weddings do? Never mind... though this one did)) - the front shows the outline of a women's body (think restroom icon), with the words "My body is not public property" within the drawing. The back says "No Trespassing / Life, Liberty and Reproductive Freedom." I'm just beyond thrilled with it, because I'm a huge geek. (You can get your own from their website.)

The not-so-happy? That I have to get up in the morning and go back to this conference..... Oh well, could be worse.

Sunday morning I am SLEEPING IN!!!!!

But it's sunny and warming up (which is nice) and my sweetie will be home soon, and maybe I can convince him to go somewhere interesting and yummy for dinner.

Still reading the same darned book I've been reading all week. But I have been productive in other ways - I finished my second (ever!) rag rug to go in the basement (to cover the Very Broken Concrete Floor). Someday I'll make a rug that will actually lie flat, but that's another story. :)

I am in the midst of a workweek that involves as little onsite office time as possible. Bwahaha! I get to spend Thursday-Saturday of my workweek at a local conference which will either be incredibly cool or incredibly infuriating. Of course, I'm hoping for the former.

It snowed today. Yes, snow. First there was drizzly rain, and then the rain got thicker and more solid and then - big fat fluffy flakes! It's supposed to continue with this lovely mix o' stuff falling from the sky all week. We can hope, anyway. Maybe this means some of my flowers will actually grow.

This also means it's incredibly cold in my house. Thankfully I'm back at work now (that's at least one good reason to be here), where it's rather comfy and warm.

I have just one comment about the prisoner abuse scandal - that's that it sickens me that the best way we know how to torture and humiliate someone is by means of sexuality. I hate what that says about our culture, and theirs, and about our worldview.

I'm reading a good (scifi/fantasy) book right now which had a passage that seemed very applicable to the above debacle, plus the Iraqi war in general. I'll try to remember to copy it out later for y'all.

I have a spot on my finger that looks like an incipient wart. Except it hurts in a tingly sharp way, and I don't remember warts doing that. I'm going to try to wish it away by force of mental powers, which I sorta did the last time I had a wart. It's all mind over matter (plus a strong immune system).

Or maybe it's just a splinter. Somehow it's very hard to tell.

I get CPR training in half an hour - we're doing infant and child tonight (having done adults 2 weeks ago).

I had many other insightful/witty/brilliant comments and thoughts to share, but they all left my head when I started typing, naturally.

This sucks

FDA Corrupts Science with Ideology, Denies Women Essential Access to Plan B® Emergency Contraception

FDA Ignores Own Expert Panel Recommendation and Comprehensive Data Showing Plan B Is Safe and Effective

May 6, 2004

NEW YORK CITY — Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) today condemned the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) decision to deny Plan B® emergency contraception (EC) over-the-counter status. The major public health setback will prevent American women from accessing a much-needed safe and effective back-up method for preventing unintended pregnancies.

See more at http://www.plannedparenthood.org/about/pr/040506_EC.html

Don't these people get it? They say they want people to have fewer abortions, and then deny them easy access to the means to make that happen.

Period. That's all this is about. This is an incredibly safe medication - there are practically no contraindications. And it will not harm an existing pregnancy. AND - the big fear in opponents' minds is that east availability will make people more promiscuous, but research has disproved that as well.

I loathe this administration.

[livejournal.com profile] sanj and [livejournal.com profile] wavyarms have both been writing on politics and activism in the past few days and combined with last weekend and the general sense of things in the air, I've been thinking about this topic a lot. Being at the March was an amazing chance to be a visible part of something huge, and feel like I was really *in* the movement, in a very tangible way. We were so far back in the crowd that we couldn't hear the speeches, but a co-worker taped the C-SPAN coverage, and I watched a lot of that last night. It turns out there were some really good speeches! (And I have some new unexpected heroes.) But the main summary of all the speeches was.... VOTE.
VOTE VOTE VOTE )
So, I'm thinking about doing some weeding today and then planting some seeds. I go nuts buying seed packets (they were cheap! only 10/$1!!) and then usually have mixed results - but it's still way better than blowing a ton of money (and that's easy to do) at the greenhouse for small plants that they've already started for you. That gets pricey sooooo fast. We have such a short growing season here that it's risky to start so soon - we have had snow on many a Mother's Day here - but I think I might chance it today. If it works, we'll have a beautiful colorful yard!!! :)

He calls it Utopia but it sounds a lot more like hell to me:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A41964-2004Apr25.html

(The story today is on Blue State Life.)

(Personally, I think someone should write something on what it's like to be a Blue Person in a Red State, or vice versa. Yeah yeah - maybe because I am one of those. But that would bring a bit more nuance to the whole thing.)
kcobweb: (Default)
So - I have to share this, because it's just too funny.

saveroe.com is a Planned Parenthood-sponsored website, and they've got a great satire up today, spoofing the White House website. Absolutely priceless.

Not to gloat or anything... but it's gorgeous here.

Here's a fun little item for you:
http://www.chuckchamblee.com/dom/fun/yankee_dixie_quiz.htm
It's a dialect quiz. I scored "39% (Yankee). A definitive Yankee." I'm kind of a mixed bag (though I think it should have been higher), with one parent from New York, another from Texas who grew up in the Midwest - and I've lived all over myself. Hmmmm. I still love these things.

To switch abruptly to politics, I cannot express how irritated I am that Nader has entered the race. I hope he has great difficulty getting on the ballots in all 50 states - because we don't need him splitting the liberal vote yet again and handing things over to the Doofus. Another 4 years like this, and I'll be out of a job, because family planning won't exist anymore! (And we'll all have worse things to worry about!)

The weather's so dry that my nails are splitting and cracking horrendously, no matter what I do. I keep cutting them shorter - every day - and a few are as short now as they used to be when I bit them all down to the quick! And how professional-looking is that? (And my hair won't stay up either, but now we're getting into petty annoyances.)

I made an old-fashioned mix tape for my sister this weekend. She's in Germany, and tired of being so far from home, so all of the songs on it have American place names (states or cities, mostly) in the title or lyrics. It was really fun to compile. (And she'll be here in 2 weeks!!! Staying for over 3 weeks!!! Woohoo!!!)
