Tonight, [livejournal.com profile] galagan had rehearsal, and so I was home by myself. I made myself dinner about the time he left.

Then I found a bread mix in the cupboard, and decided to bake that. (It turned out a little weird; I dunno.)

I cleaned out part of the fridge, and washed all the dirty dishes that were in the sink and/or scattered about the kitchen.

I made a salad/side dish (mmmm, quinoa) of ingredients I happened to have in the house.

I sat and flipped through a couple of cookbooks.

And then topped off the evening by scrubbing dirty smudgemarks and fingerprints off the inside of the front door.

Nesting, anyone? (And here I thought that stage was supposed to come in the third trimester.)

I've found that by the time I get around to making bread mix, it has gone old and the yeast have died.
Of course, when I buy live yeast and keep it in the fridge, it still dies before I get around to baking bread.
I recommend muffins. Or the bakery.

This just smells funny. I think I'm going to throw it out, because we're afraid to even cut into it. :)

what did you cook with the quinoa? [livejournal.com profile] woobat and I were just earlier to day thinking about what we could make with quinoa (we've tried timbales before, but most of the quinoa recipes we have are much more to woobat's tastes than mine).

This is my one standard quinoa recipe - it's okay, though not great. In my opinion, it's missing the addition of a magical secret ingredient, and I have yet to figure out what that should be.

Quick Quinoa Salad

1 2/3 c. dry quinoa
3 1/3 c. water
pinch of salt
1 c. chopped carrots
3/4 c. minced parsley or cilantro
1/3 c. sunflower seeds
4 clove garlic, minced
1/3 c. lemon juice
3 T. olive oil
3 T. tamari or soy sauce
(And I always add a splash of rice vinegar)

Directions:
-Rinse quinoa with water and drain through a fine strainer.
-Place quinoa in a 3-quart pan with water and salt; bring to a boil
-Turn heat to lower, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes
-Allow quinoa to sit on very low heat uncovered for an extra 5 minutes to dry out
-Toss quinoa with a fork and let cool
-Add carrots, parsley, seeds, and garlic to quinoa; mix thoroughly
-Combine lemon juice, oil, and soy suace
-Pour over quinoa and toss well
-Garnich with silced black olives or tomato wedges if desired.
