We went to the farmer's market this morning - the last of the season, sadly. I missed most of the markets this year for one reason or another, so I was determined to buy stuff today. I bought some various peppers - with the idea of making pico de gallo (a late-summer favorite of mine). We were almost ready to leave, but I was still contemplating tomatoes.
galagan saw a sign for Roma tomatoes for 12/$1. They are a favorite of his, so he decided to get a dollar's worth. While he was picking them out, I was looking over what else they had, when the owner of the stand sidled up to me and said "Hey, ya wanna make a deal?" I ended up getting probably 5 pounds of tomatoes for $1.50. His offer entirely - I didn't haggle at all. He said, "$1.50", and I thought "well, I'd be stupid to turn that down."
So I brought them all home and started chopping. On the outside they weren't the prettiest of fruits, but the insides all revealed gorgeous beautiful tomato flesh. I made a double recipe of the pico de gallo, and still have plenty.
Anybody want some?
Actually, I told my mother I'd bring some to her for dinner tonight, and she can make us gazpacho (no complaints here!).
I need to go grocery shopping now - to buy chips in order to eat that pico de gallo, among other things. I have a list several miles long - but it's a lovely day, and I'd much prefer to waste it. :)
