So, we were listening in the car to [livejournal.com profile] ellinor's awesome new 90s mix (and it is awesome), so I was in a 90s kind of mood, and then we arrived at the diner for breakfast and someone was playing "Brown Eyed Girl" on the jukebox, and I said "This would be on the soundtrack for my freshman year of college."

And thus it was born - I started coming up with the list of songs would be my college soundtrack. Songs that instantly evoke for me (and likely, no one else) that place and time. (For those who don't know, the years in question are 1990-94.)

I'm still finessing the list. It was songs that popped into my head during discussion about it - and then I came home and dredged up old mix tapes, which had a few others I had forgotten. Funny thing: there is a strong core of songs that speak of My Freshman Year, and then the other 3 years kind of blur together - it's harder to remember whether I'm remembering sophomore or senior year or what..... Anyway, this was fun.

Roughly in my *personal* chronological order:

Some of those remind me of dancing at parties at the row houses; some are in-jokes; some are songs my neighbors would blast so that the whole building could hear it; some are very specific memories. Gods, I might just have to make that. Because that would be beyond awesome.

I'd ask if I missed any, but that assumes y'all were right there in the same times and places with me. Which only a few of you actually were. *grin*

ETA: I almost forgot Nothing Compares 2 U, by Sinead O'Connor. I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] saltcod remembers why. :)

Let me work on compiling it. I'm thinking vaguely that I might cut some to get it all onto 1 CD - but that remains to be seen. Think of the above list as a rough draft.

But you can absolutely have a copy of the finished product!

Interestingly, some of the more esoteric ones are also categorized in my head as Thinking Of Williams songs - Groove Is In The Heart, Closer to Fine, Don't Lets Start and Birdhouse, BNL. I think that These Are Days reminds everyone of their time in college. :)

I didn't say I was being particularly *original*. :)

Hee. This is where our small age difference shows up. Most of those songs mean high school for me.

I got Bare Naked Ladies' CD for Christmas and I was instantly transported back to the spring of 1999, my sophomore year of college. It's amazing how music can do that to you.
