So we're back from New York City. I realized this morning that this was the first time I've ever stayed in a hotel in New York - before it was always my grandmother's apartment, or my sister's place. Our hotel was at 42nd and 3rd, so we were right in midtown and mostly stayed around there - though we did venture on our first night out to my sister's place in Jersey City.

On Monday, while galagan was at the conference, my sister met us and we went to the American Museum of Natural History (for the dinosaurs). Elena only paid so much attention - in some of the galleries she was more interested in pushing her stroller as fast as it could go, and we had to try to keep her from running people down. So we didn't always get to see a lot of detail. But it was fun. After the museum, we wandered in Central Park a little bit. That evening, we had dinner in Koreatown, which was excellent. (I know so little about Korean food! But it was yummy.) We also walked up to Times Square, just 'cause.

Tuesday, Elena and I got a smoothie to drink and walked a little on 5th Avenue. Just wandering around. Then galagan joined us for lunch and we hopped on a train and came home.

Elena was pretty great during the day - she looooooved riding the trains, both commuter rail and subway. She mostly rode in her stroller for all that walking (except in the museum). But the nights were dreadful - the first night, she was awake until 11:45, and the second, past midnight. [pause for screams of anguish from the parents who have also Been There] Once she fell asleep she was mostly fine, though. I really never want to share a hotel room with her ever again, but I know that won't be possible...... Alas. Her sleep schedule had gotten so askew that it was tough to wake her up this morning to head back to school, but we managed. I hope this means she will just crash tonight.

I managed all my big city anxiety appropriately - see! I even left my hotel room willingly! I was really glad to come back, though. As we crested the hills and came into MA, the rain clouds were clearing and the sun was out, and there was a rainbow - and everything was fresh-washed and sparkling and sunshiny clean. It's good to be home.

My dad's store is 5th and 31st; your stroll in Koreatown was on 32nd between 5th and 6th. Very transitional area, just between Times Square, Herald Square, Madison Avenue, Flatiron, Union Square....
