Yesterday was the end of a (minor) era for us: our last playgroup before Elena starts preschool. (Next week we're on vacation, and she starts when we get back!) When we first moved here, the single best piece of advice I got (from the rabbi's wife) was "Join the EI playgroups, and you'll meet everyone you need to know." Pretty much all of my friends here with kids (except kouredios, I think) came about through that connection - either they were in the playgroup, or I met them through other playgroup people. Yay. That said, the group was better run last year, and I'm not too upset about ducking out of a disorganized group a little early. I will miss hanging out with other moms to chat once a week..... but I guess I'll still have the library story hour.

In other news:

* We go to Texas on Saturday! We're doing multiple loads of laundry today so we'll have actual clean clothes to wear. There's practically no food in the house - or at least, nothing to construct dinner from - so we're going to have to go out the next few nights.

* It's going to be freaking hot there - high 80s, into the 90s. (Blech. That's probably a little too hot for my delicate northern constitution.) I had to dig out all my shorts and see if they still fit. Good news, they mostly do. Toenails have been painted. There will be sandals and bare feet and stuff.

* And, OMG, I have to pack. Sheesh.

* I am resolutely NOT worrying about where/how Elena will sleep, nor how her potty training progress will be affected by a week away. We'll just deal with it.

* I need to put lots of kiddie music on my mp3 player, for her amusement purposes. They Might Be Giants as children's music is a bizarre thing - it *works*, but it's strange. :)

* I also need to get ready to lead discussion for my book club tonight about Joy Comes in the Morning. So far, the book club members I've run into say they liked it, so that's a good sign.....

I didn't know the playgroup you were a part of was/is the EI playgroup! I did a field work placement with EI my senior year at Williams and helped out with the playgroup. I even planned and led the circle time a couple of times. :)

They have a college intern with the playgroup now who is just fabulous. Overall, I've been really impressed with all the EI programs. And I'll bet circle time hasn't changed too much over the years!

Ooh, I hope the Joy Comes in the Morning discussion is fun. I really liked that book. I'm arguably right smack in the middle of its target demographic (hi, the protagonist is a 30-something female rabbi) but I think a lot of its appeal is broad enough that you don't have to be me to dig it. :-)

I'll let you know how it goes - I'm pleased that all the people I've talked to thus far had very positive things to say. :) I had mixed feelings (http://kcobweb.livejournal.com/250040.html#cutid1) about some of it (I felt like the main character seemed to say a few times that there was only One True Way (hers) to be Jewish - which I very much disagree with), but I recognize that a lot of that is my personal baggage. And overall I liked it very much.
