I didn't quite finish this in time for galagan's birthday - two days late!! I thought some of you would like to see this.
Speaking of which, we are going to Texas in two weeks! Any of you natives of Central Texas (ahem, kassrachel, nyssa23) have any suggestions/recommendations for us? We're staying in New Braunfels.
We fly in the 19th, and leave on the 26th. As I said, we're staying in New Braunfels, and we'll be with a bunch of rowdies friends. (ltlbird was going to come, but can't; I don't think you'd know any of the others - some of whom are Williams folk, but are all *elderly*. Older than me. 8grin*) I'm not sure which days have group activities planned - or how mobile I'll be on the days galagan has to work (telecommuting has drawbacks).
But I'd love to meet Miriam! Oh yeah, and see you guys too. :)
Ahem. Tragically, I have never myself been to New Braunfels so I'm not sure what's good there--although you should probably have some German food while you're there. I do recommend you see Natural Bridge Caverns and the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch if possible (about midway between New Braunfels and San Antonio.)
Re: south Texas -- I can recommend some shiny restaurants for you in San Antonio, should you make it there. In McQueeney, which is very near New Braunfels, you might seek out the Lake Breeze Ski Lodge; it's a classic old establishment, your basic Tex-Mex and sort of pub food and whatnot, with amazing chocolate cake. (Mostly it is one of the major locations of my growing-up, so I have a nostalgic soft spot for it; it's probably not that exciting to a casual visitor.)
Ooh, if you wind up in Gruene (again, not far from New Braunfels) go to the Grist Mill (http://www.gristmillrestaurant.com/). Fantastic fried catfish and hush puppies and beer.
Fredericksburg, up in the Hill Country (a totally reasonable day trip) is a sweet little town, lots of antique shops and whatnot, plus there's Enchanted Rock (http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/enchanted_rock/).
