So, yesterday my car randomly decided not to start. I called AAA (while waiting, I wrote a whiny post for LJ, and then deleted it). He came and jump-started the car, helped me clean the corrosion off the contact points, I went for a 30 minute drive to recharge it and only *then* got to run my errands (and was too late for some of them because of said 30-minute drive).

This morning, we were having a very leisurely breakfast and reading the paper when we heard a big metallic/tinkly *crash*. We went all over the place, and couldn't figure out what it was..... "Maybe some snow slid off the roof, and um....?" Soon, I looked out a window, and saw a dead bird. Okay, that's what it was - it would be the second one this week that ran into our sun room. It's a big one too (I think it's a grouse, as best I can tell). .....Only it wasn't the sun room. When we went upstairs, I realized that the bathroom window was gone. Fortunately the screen held, so all the glass fell *out*. The roof is littered with glass and feathers. Poor birdy. [livejournal.com profile] galagan cut a board and put it in place, and tomorrow I'll call around and see what we're in for.

Just in time for more wintry mix mess too. Our Monday drop-off playgroup was canceled last week for wintry mess, and I will be So Bummed if this week's is too. I mean, Elena likes playing there a lot - but even more so, I have shopping and holiday errands that need to be run, and I'd rather do some of them without her, kthxbai.

So I'm just done. Can everything else stay together (in one piece, working order, etc) for a while now? On the other hand, I have (many) crafty projects, I made a new kind of cookie this morning (Clouds of Cashew and Cardomom, or some such cheezy name) and I'm currently making Chex mix. Mmmm, worcestershire sauce. :)

Completely off-topic, does anyone local have an elephant nose (like, a mask) that I could borrow? I really need one.

Oy. It could be worse, I guess: the dead bird could have crashed into your car and killed both, or the car could have died crashing into the sun room, or... (oh, you didn't ask [sorry]). Blech. But yay for the healing properties of Chex mix and cookie things.

It could be much much worse. I'm particularly glad the bird ran into a smallish window in a small room that we don't spend all our time in, and can avoid using, if possible (we do have other bathrooms).

Still, it feels like a confluence of breakage, so I suspect the forces of the universe are working against me. Or something.

Though I have to say, your AAA guy is a hero compared to the jerk I got when my car battery died last year. He charged my battery, but told me I'd better drive straight to a shop because his gadget said the battery wasn't going to hold a charge and would die on me again. Then he sold me a new battery for $100, because what was I supposed to do, with a baby in the car and another one I needed to pick up from school? When I went to return the old battery, which was still under warranty, they said it was perfectly good, it's just that there was corrosion on the points, just like yours, so maybe the gadget wasn't reading very well. So yeah, could have been worse.

Still, I hope nothing else goes wrong any time soon!! Poor bird!

My guy had me mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda into 1 cup of warm water, and we poured that over the corrosion to clean it off. Then he had me get 1 cup of plain water, to rinse off the battery. He said that it could have been caused by my battery being older than 3 years (he said anything after that is a crapshoot), and I'm sure mine is. It's working fine now (apparently) - so I'm disinclined to get a new one, seeing as I'd prefer to get a whole new *car* instead.

But my guy was a talker - he spent some time chitchatting about his trip to Alaska last year and all kinds of stuff. :)

Now, get on that fudge! The universe needs the sugar!!!

Umm, don't they sell decals of birds you can stick to your windows that warh birds not to crash into them? If it's happening several times a week...

Or, a fun craft activity for the little tyke -- they sell these little colored solutions that dry into clear plastic designs that adhere to window panes. I'm not describing it very well, but my sister uses them a lot.

I'm having fun imagining why you "really need" an elephant nose.

good luck keeping the birdies off your windows!!
