At the toddler's insistence, we went out for a pre-lunch walk around the block. And one of our neighbors - who has a huge gorgeous garden - has a small table on her driveway, covered with veggies and a sign saying "Free to a good home". We took a yellow squash, a green pepper, and a beautiful tomato. (I may have to go back for more tomatoes - she had tons of them.) I think I'll make them into pasta primavera for dinner. Yay - fresh and (very) local veggies for dinner!

"Free to a good home" -- that's pretty charming.

Several jobs ago, when I worked in Hoosick Falls, I used to drive home past a seasonal zucchini stand that operated on the honor system, which I always thought was awesome. You know -- for all of one's random middle-of-the-night zucchini needs. *g*

I was watching Alton Brown's "Feasting on Asphalt" last night, and they visited a farm that grows asparagus, where you can harvest your own, and there's a little table beside the road with a scale and a box to pay for the number of pounds you picked at just a dollar a pound. It wasn't a very orderly field, which made me wonder whether it wasn't a field the farmer had left alone (asparagus are perennial) and it wasn't worth bothering to harvest to sell, so he just let people come pick on the honor system. Any income would be a bonus that way.

Now that, that is the sign of a good neighborhood. How nice!
