kcobweb: (Mommy & the EK)

I had a very vivid dream yesterday that [livejournal.com profile] saltcod and I were both going back to college (roommates, again?). Once that setting was established, there was berry-picking and then I started writing a paper (long-hand) on Persuasion - at which point I woke up. Mmmmm, berries.

A year ago I witnessed a car accident (I seem to do that too often, really) - and a few weeks afterwards, talked to one of the insurance companies and gave a statement, blah blah. Yesterday I got a form from an(other?) insurance company dealing with their claim and could I fill out their form? Yeah, but... it's been a freaking year, people. At the time, I was a new mother and not sleeping and worrying lots about my baby never gaining weight and all that - I wasn't exactly high on brain power. I don't remember much beyond the very basic facts. It's ludicrous to expect otherwise, it seems to me. (How much would you remember of a not-very-traumatic accident/ event a year after it happened?)

Along the lines of accidents, we were out for a walk last night and did not see - only heard - the crash of a bicycle getting clipped by a passing car (we were facing the other way). [livejournal.com profile] galagan ran and got some paper napkins from a nearby gas station for her to clean her face with - the girl was very shaken up and just sitting on the pavement - she had a helmet but her chin and face looked rather scraped up. And say what you will about big cities and difficult traffic conditions (it was about 7 p.m. and traffic was heavy), but the emergency response team was there lightning fast. They were taking care of her - and we hadn't actually seen anything so we left. But I'm thinking a lot about that poor girl today.

The EK has been a little crabby and demanding lately - we are starting to enter the phase of repetition. She usually picks *my* least favorite book to repeat, of course. 'Tis Barnyard Banter - which I don't mind the first time, but drives me crazy several times in a row. After lunch, she was sitting on my lap on the couch for a story, and when it was done, she got down, as usual - and, not as usual, pitched forward and hit her face on the coffee table. There was much screaming and blood for *forever* (10 minutes?) but after the bleeding slowed we could see it was just a big gash in her lip. I fed her a snack, and popped her into bed for a nap (and she went right to sleep) - I suspect when she wakes up there will be smears of blood all over the sheets and she'll have one big fat lip.

So, ENOUGH ACCIDENTS EVERYBODY.

Gah. I was there for the aftermath of a car v. bicycle on Monday. It took some doing to get the woman hit (who didn't have a helmet) to let us call the paramedics, and some more talking by them to get her to go to the hospital. Luckily, a friend showed up to go with her.

On the good side, she didn't lose consciousness. On the bad one, she didn't really remember what happened during the accident either.

I also felt bad for the driver, who did the right thing and stopped, and helped the girl, and then stayed to talk to the police. But he was just making a right turn, now all of a sudden... I hope they're both okay.

Glad to hear that the EK's adventures have been less dire, if quite dramatic.

Eeek. That is scary. The driver in our case stopped too - and there were lots of people around to help (the guys from the restaurant right there grabbed a towel for her face and so forth). This woman was at least wearing a helmet, but she seemed very shaken up. And I don't blame her - she was thrown onto asphalt at 30+ mph.

Ugh, shit like that gives me nightmares. I wanna do a lot more biking this summer, but it's a given in NYC that there has to be at least one major spill, and I'm older now. My bones are brittle. I got no desire to faceplant at thirty miles an hour, swandive over some car hood or whatever.

Hope the EK is doing OK now.

Yeoch. At least I think the collision on my block was pretty low-speed.

Poor baby! Sarah's had a few busted lips in her time too. And more recently, Hunter had a little oblong bruise on his forehead from smacking it on the windowsill when he didn't want to lie down on the changing table. *sigh*

The thing about baby books is that there's never anything new to discover on the second reading. Or, for that matter, the thirty-fifth.

Poor EK! Bleeding is scary, isn't it? (Except Sarah's- she gets scrapes so often they're routine- it's a darn good thing we don't have a coffee table, or either Sarah or the glass top would have met an untimely demise by now.) Sammy's got a bruise on her face right now too. She has a cold and was running away from getting her nose wiped when she crashed into the futon. The thought of either of them ever riding a 10-speed down a busy street... nope, just not gonna think about that yet!
