I want a do-over
Jul. 6th, 2004 02:42 pmThis weekend sucked, overall, which makes me bitter about being at work today. (Of course, I'm doing very little productive work. See, right now I'm pretending to read about HIV, and instead I'm reading LJ and posting.)
Actually, the camping trip (already written up) wasn't so bad, but yesterday sucked. And in fact, everyone I've talked to agrees that yesterday sucked in a big way. NO ONE had a good weekend. What does that say? Are we entering a global (regional?) period of negative karma? Hmmmm.
(Hee hee - "period of negative karma" makes me laugh, but none of you would know why. Ummm... how to explain... it's a freaky Montana thing. I'll leave it at that.)
Our personal level of suckiness revolved around plumbing problems at the house, plus a minor leak in the basement (nothing got wet but some old cracked concrete - no biggie there). I have co-workers whose problems range from flooding in basements (from the whiz-bang eeenormous thunderstorms) to friends of the family dying to a potentially abusive situation in a breaking-up marriage. Yup. Just a bundle of joy over here.
(In fact, some of those make me feel bad for complaining about plumbing issues, but I'm sorry. That's a biggie too.)
(
sanj, we keep quoting Suzanne to each other: "never buy a house")
(I'm apparently feeling very parenthetical today.)

Jun. 1st, 2004 08:13 amThe rest of the weekend was much as it should have been. No more fits of crabbiness beyond what is generally expected.
It was appliance hell weekend, however. We went Sunday and bought a ceiling fan. We have absolutely no ability or knowledge around the issue of wiring, but fans are necessary in a 2-story very old badly-insulated house - and a ceiling fan seems like it might help a bit. So, there is that fiasco, waiting for us whenever we decide to attempt that. Yesterday we were about to go buy an air conditioner (for the really bad hot nights - that store was closed on Sunday) - and before we left,
galagan decided to mow our lawn (the back, um, really REALLY needed it) - and our lawnmower died. Argh. So we went and bought the air conditioner, and looked at mowers. I should point out that the one reason we haven't bought an AC yet is that we live in an old house which has casement windows, and if one is so foolish as NOT to buy an AC at the beginning of the season, one cannot *get* a casement AC in Billings because everyone is sold out. The fact that casement-style ACs cost roughly twice as much as what we would buy otherwise is also a factor. We bought this AC because it's a casement-style and was on sale, and we're tired of spending the whole summer wishing for fall. But! Having spent a couple of hundred dollars on that did not predispose us towards wanting to spend a couple more hundred dollars on a new mower. Blargh. We actually scoped out the old-fashioned non-motorized type at the hardware store, and they are cheap cheap cheap. We have a small yard. It's a possibility.
Besides, mowing the yard isn't my job. :)
We also, at some point, will need a new refrigerator.
sanj, do you remember when our basement flooded in Somer-ford/Med-ville, and our landlady said "Never buy a house! Rent!" - I suspect it was stuff like this that she was talking about. :)
Anyway.
It's Tuesday morning, and I'm still at home. I'm driving this afternoon halfway across the state, and working a very full day tomorrow and then driving back in the middle of the night (through no fault of my own). So I have a miniscule number of hours to actually be in the office this week. The event I'm driving to is a clergy and choice conference planned by one of my co-workers. It should be vaguely interesting, even if the topic isn't the nearest to my heart. I wish I were driving by myself though - which most people hate to do. But when I'm by myself, I can crank up the music I want to listen to, and sing along at the top of my lungs, and stop when/if I want to..... Other people just cramp my style.
At least I have a beautiful day for it. Yay!

Apr. 2nd, 2004 02:27 pmI'm sitting here pretending to balance my checkbook, but really surfing LJ. And doing so in order that I can avoid housecleaning. And cakebaking, though that part will be fun. How many layers of avoidance can you manage to *do* at once?
Two days ago it was 80 degrees here. This morning it snowed. Spring in Montana, sheesh. It's supposed to be nice again by Sunday. Meanwhile, outside everything is all melty and the grass is really getting green! We just don't get much green here, so we have to take it while we can get it.
I have major cleaning out to do this weekend. A former roommate is moving back to town and back into our house. In the past year (in which we have had no roommates) our stuff has expanded to fill the house, of course. Now we have to pack it all back into smaller spaces. It's not that bad - we need a good cleaning out, desperately - we're overdue - but it's still a little bit of a drag.
It will be fun to have him back around though. He left 2 years ago, and we've only seen him.... once in that time, at our wedding. He's an architect and very into environmental issues (we'll start composting again). I've known him since the 8th grade - there's a frightening thought. He's more social than either of us, and that's a big reason why we decided to let him live with us again - we're hoping that his presence knocks us out of our collective anti-social rut.
But the computers are in the room that will be his. So is all my sewing&crafty stuff. There are nice posters on the wall in here that will have to be taken down. Things will get rearranged throughout the house to make way. He will be here in town on Wednesday, so I really need to get this done before I go back to work on Monday morning.
Time to go make a chocolate cake for
galagan> Then I'll clean house.... :)
