In which we have an update

So, it's been busy around here, it seems. My dad was here for a 5-day visit. We were pretty low-key: lots of sitting around reading (because that's just what we *do* in my family).

On Saturday, we agreed to meet my sister somewhere halfway between here and New York City, which turned out to be Poughkeepsie - just a 2-hour drive for everybody. We were originally going to meet at the CIA (not *that* CIA), which is in Hyde Park. We got there first, discovered that the cafe we were planning to eat at was closed, and wandered around the building looking at stuff while we waited for my sister to call us back. They do intensive boot camps there, apparently, and I am trying to convince one or the other of my parents that they want to do something like that. A found a cafe in Poughkeepsie, directly across from the Vassar campus. When we got there, I totally recognized the intersection - I'm pretty sure my mom and I ate somewhere on that block when we did the big college visiting thing in April 1990. After lunch, we ended up wandering the campus of Vassar, which is just lovely. The library is particularly gorgeous (though the chapel doesn't compare to Thompson Chapel at all). There were many different trees, and J (A's boyfriend) kept running to look at them all, trying to guess what it was before looking at the labels. Elena was moderately cranky throughout all this, so eventually we decided we should probably get in the car and head back.

Sunday we went to MassMOCA, which was also fun. Elena had recently been there with [livejournal.com profile] galagan and had several favorite exhibits (she's especially fond of the Jenny Holzer piece, which has texts projected onto walls (moving like movie credits) in a huge room filled with giant beanbag chairs, and the "apple-drop" which is an homage to Newton).

Dad left yesterday, and so today is bit of a catch-up day - I'm trying to clear my desk of all the itty bitty pieces of paper that have collected here in the past few days. We had a fun play-date this morning with someone I've been meaning to invite over for quite a while - he and E ran up and down and up and down, and Elena was very very sad when it was time for them to leave. But he gave me a big hug and kiss..... awww. And the bonus is that I spent 30 minutes this morning picking up toys and crap, so the house is relatively neat right now. Yay. I should just have someone over every week or two, and then the house would stay picked up. Hmmmm.

Um, that area being my proverbial backyard, I could've told you that St. Andrews would've been shut. :) But glad y'all enjoyed just the same.

I think it was the Apple Pie Bakery, or something. Nah - I'm glad we got a chance to see it, because it was so cool!!! We got to peer into all the kitchens (empty, but still lovely).

Elena and I appear to have similar taste in art; those are two of my favorites out of the current exhibit as well. :)

"...lots of sitting around reading (because that's just what we *do* in my family)."

Heh. In that way, your family sounds a lot like mine.

My dad has a standard line, upon walking into a room where my family is gathered and everyone's sitting there reading: "What is this? the reading room of the New York Public Library?"

Cassie is particularly enamored of the wall of fans, just next to the apples. :D We went on free day last weekend, and now every time we pass MoCA she mentions the free ice cream we got at Lickety Split.

I noticed exactly the same thing this weekend; I'm trying to shift my thinking from, "We aren't having anyone over because the house is a wreck" to, "The house is a wreck because we aren't having anyone over." Hmm. Possibly there is a third variable which causes those two to correlate.

I'm glad you had such a fun time with the visit!

D'oh! That was me.
