So, I have been asked to suggest a book for my book club to read. Of course, I thought I'd turn to the wisdom of the collective for ideas. I have only been in this group since September, but I would characterize the sort of thing they/we read as somewhat literary, relatively contemporary fiction (mostly). The contemporary stuff that *I* read tends toward space opera or fantasy novels; the non-genre reading I do tends to focus these days on obscure hits of the 18th and 19th century. I don't think any of that is especially appropriate. Under the cut are the books they've read in the past year or so, if that's any help.
Snowflower and the Secret Fan
Little Children
The Memory Keeper's Daughter
The year or Magical Thinking
A movable Feast
Housekeeping
The Omnivore's Dilemma
1000 White Women
The Inheritance of Loss, by Kiran Desai
75 Short Stories
Water for Elephants, by Sara Gruen
Shadow of the Wind, by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Every Little Thing, by Lisa Carey
and the next scheduled one after that is something by Kazuo Ishiguro (I think it's Never Let Me Go)
Suggestions please!
