Ten Things I Like: Letter P Edition by [livejournal.com profile] kcobweb

Penguins - I've had a penguin fixation since well before I fell in love with Bloom County and Opus in 8th or 9th grade. I just love 'em. My dad used to give me lots of penguin-themed things. In college, I had a life-sized inflatable emperor penguin. (I still have him, but he sprang a leak, and therefore, is deflated and not so special or exciting. His name is Bert. There was an ode to Bert, even.) Now, [livejournal.com profile] xen_opus is mostly the one who feeds my penguin love and keeps it alive. I'm glad someone does.
Pride and Prejudice / Persuasion / Possession - Can it be a coincidence that so many of my favorite books have titles starting with P? I think not. This means something.
Pasta - I love the stuff. Just the other day, I saw something along the lines of "which would be harder to give up forever: cheese or chocolate? pasta or bread? (...I can't remember the other one). For me it would be pasta. (And cheese. There's so much variety in cheese, I think having all those different cheeses would mostly make up for the loss of chocolate. But whatever.) My favorite comfort food meal is small pasta (such as baby small shells) with a little butter and a LOT of sauteed garlic and shredded parmesan cheese atop. If I can eat that on a semi-regular basis, I'm a happy girl.
Pioneer women - I grabbed this one off my LJ interests list. I've always been fascinated by the women who settled the American West. Imagine being taken 1000 miles or so from your family and friends - and any vestige of civilization - and being plopped down in the middle of nowhere and having to make a living and a life there. It's just staggering to contemplate. I love reading published journals and diaries of those days.
Planned Parenthood / the pro-choice movement - Even if I don't work there any more, I cannot overstate the profound effect PP has had on my life - in so many ways, it *formed* me and who I am today. I've been actively pro-choice since my early teens - I don't remember the exact year, just that abortion was in the news before Congress? the Supreme Court?), and I was appalled that a bunch of old white men in red power ties 2000 miles away were discussing my potential bodily fate. Even now that I've left my jobs working with those issues, I still feel very passionately about them, and I will never quite leave that behind me, no matter where my life takes me. (Having a daughter now? just makes me feel more strongly about it.)
Politics - I've always been interested in following politics, but always in the role of detached cynical observer. I find the system - especially for national elections - just fascinating to track - and even more so, to try and predict.
Pickles - I made pickles recently! I used my aunt's recipe for cold brine dill pickles, and they are okay, though perhaps not great (a bit salty, somehow). I also made refrigerator pickles - a slightly sweeter recipe. AND, I have my grandmother's recipe for really sweet pickles, which involves a jar of cheap-o pickle chips and a whole lotta sugar. :) Gonna make those soon, as soon as I, um, eat through some of the pickle backlog currently in the fridge.
Peanuts - My afternoon snack, nearly every single day, is a small dish with a small amount of chocolate chips in the bottom, with the remainder of the dish filled up to the brim with salted peanuts. Mmmmmm. If I don't get that, my day feels a little empty.
Planning - I am a planner. I make lists of everything I need to do and then I revise the lists, and then I write it down in 12 different places, and then I compile the lists, and make lists of lists.... It's a bit compulsive, but it helps me maintain that illusion of control. And if I don't write something down, then I will instantly forget about it. So this is how I maintain my facade as a productive member of society and remember to get out of bed in the morning.
Pizza - One of the only restaurants I really miss from Montana is Mackenzie River Pizza, a Montana chain that makes awesome yuppie pizza. Our favorite there is the Sequoia, which is a pesto-based pizza with artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, and slivered almonds. Unbelievably yummy. And we just don't seem to have a good source around here for yuppie pizza - just lots of traditional Italian pizza (which I also like, but it isn't the same).
