An actor who specialized in dialects once took half an hour or so with me to try to get me to place my accent (this was my freshman year in college). Most people he could get in about five minutes. I forget what actually finally betrayed me -- something to do with syrup, I think -- but he finally pegged me to Northeastern NY/Northern VT, and that was smack dab on the nose.
